About Maya
Maya Betti is a senior at St. Olaf College, studying English and political science. She has served as a student government reporter, news editor and, most recently, executive editor of The Olaf Messenger, the college’s only student newspaper.
Maya is passionate about local journalism, having reported for the St. Paul Park Bugle, KYMN Radio and Press Publications, which publishes a variety of newspapers in the north metro area of the Twin Cities. Maya even had brief stint as a founding editor for a nonprofit paper, The Roseville Reporter, based in her hometown — which had been without a newspaper since 2019.
This past summer, Maya worked at The New York Times as a Communications Intern, helping to launch the new Twin Cities-based newsletter, The Local.
Needless to say, reliable reporting that informs people about the communities they live in — and how decisions made within them affect everyday life — is a big part of Maya’s work. She is especially interested in stories where policy, politics and people intersect, and hopes to continue producing journalism that makes complex issues more accessible, transparent and relevant to the public.
